Also over the summer, there was an event at VIVO. Unfortunately I missed it, but Princess Genevieve told me of a noteworthy performance by Fransico in which he performed fellatio on a bar of soap. I wish I was there to witness it, as the full of contraditory meanings. connotations of homosexual taboo, intimacy, public indecency, and lewd behavior worked simultaneously with and against connotations of decency, social propriety, and cleanliness, all in one act.

The exercise in class got me thinking:

The actions the class performed did not match the material. Actions were divorced from purpose. It created an irrational context. Movements and gestures were no longer a means to an end to further the script, but an end unto themselves. Movements, actions and gestures, devoid of function become aestheticized, much like the Readymades of Marcel Duchamp. After all, isn't that what art is?... that which has no purpose?
Over the summer I saw a performance at the Western Front. The audience was sitting in a circle along the perimeter of the room while this fat man proceeded to give audience members piggyback rides around the room. Before each ride, he would ask the participant's name, and add that name to a list of names that he would recite before and after each ride. The performance ended when everyone in the room who wanted a ride had gotten one. I was encouraged to take a ride, but I refused. Mostly because I thought the whole thing was retarded and un-artistic. If there was a metaphor or allegory to be found, I missed it.
